My weekend project involved some Twitter datamining and link analysis (i.e. links that people tweet about). The results we gathered during the weekend were… at least surprising.
By looking at popular Twitter link aggregators like Tweetmeme.com or twitt(url)y you might get the impression that Twitter is full of useful news, links to interesting stuff, a truly user-driven next-level communication.
Below is the result of one-day data analysis, and it lists top links people were tweeting about on Friday:

The list goes and goes. What is shocking is the popularity of "Twitter-based marketing" (a combination of spam, sales, marketing, ebooks).
If you have never seen any of those links before, this is probably because you stick to your friends' timelines, and this is what most people do. But the increasing number of users trying to actually earn money by moving the well-know internet-based sales schemes to Twitter is at least surprising.
The top links from above easily get thousands of tweets per day, leaving organically-created links far behind.

You should probably introduce some karma-calculation for links and use the antispam system you developed some time ago to make the results cleaner.

Thanks for the fascinating analysis, Michal. I had the same misconception that meaningful content was being circulated by community-minded tweeters. I figured there would be lots of noise. Since I'm selective in who I follow, I didn't notice.
